Abstract:        This presentation explains some of the concepts of the exciting field of cultural psychology. I will explain the cultural origins, organization, stimulation, socialization, operating mechanisms, and the cultural function of psychological phenomena. I will illustrate all of this with an example of how victims of neoliberal austerity policies, nevertheless internalize neoliberal values as a way of interpreting their misfortunes. I explain some psychotherapeutic implications of this cultural psychology. Finally, I compare this approach to Freud’s analyses of Dora and Shreber. I explain how cultural psychology would analyze their symptoms and treat them.

Carl Ratner    has worked in cultural psychology since the 1970s. One of the earliest influences on him was R.D. Laing in the field of mental illness. The most important influence on him has been Vygotsky. Ratner has developed a theory of cultural psychology that he calls Macro Cultural Psychology. He has written extensively about emotions, childhood, perception, cognition, cross-cultural psychology, indigenous psychology, qualitative methodology, postmodernism and social constructionism. He has just published a chapter entitled “Marxist Psychology, Vygotsky’s Cultural Psychology, and Psychoanalysis” in his edited volume Vygotsky and Marx: Toward A Marxist Psychology. Routledge. Ratner has lived in China, India, and England for extended periods of teaching and research. Homepage: www.sonic.net/~cr2
