The Specialised Training in Health Psychology is a postgraduate programme that prepares students for the profession of health psychologist as regulated by the Austrian Psychology Act. It provides the scientific and professional qualifications required by law for independent and autonomous work in the field of health psychology prevention and intervention and the planning, implementation and evaluation of health measures.

Admission Requirements

The formal requirement for admission to the university course Specialist Training in Health Psychology is the completion of a degree in psychology comprising 300 ECTS credits at a recognised Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution. The provisions of the Austrian Psychologists Act also make admission to the specialist training programme dependent on the following requirements: The postgraduate training programme may only be commenced by those who have demonstrably acquired 75 ECTS credits of theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in as equal a proportion as possible in the following course content during their psychology studies:

psychopathology, psychopharmacology, psychiatry and neurology
psychological diagnostics with special reference to health-related experience and behaviour and mental disorders, including exercises
Methods and areas of application in the field of health promotion, disease prevention and rehabilitation
psychological interventions in the field of health psychology and clinical psychology, including exercises

Further admission requirements are a

a general practitioner’s certificate of physical fitness
a clinical-psychological or specialist psychiatric report on mental aptitude

Admission Procedure

The admission procedure consists of the application and the selection procedure. If the admission procedure is successful, a place on the programme is allocated subject to availability.

Selection procedure
The selection procedure consists of a review of the competences required for the degree programme in an admissions interview with the head of the degree programme. In particular, previous academic achievements and the acquisition of the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills required by law as part of the psychology degree programme are reviewed in this interview.

Qualification Profile and Competences

Students acquire the professional skills necessary for independent health psychology research, counselling and treatment of people, groups and organisations based on scientific findings and for the development, implementation and evaluation of health-promoting measures and projects.
