At Sigmund Freud University Vienna, a university course “Suicide prevention plus” – training to become a suicide prevention gatekeeper – was established in the academic year 2018/2019. The course provides action-oriented know-how in assessing suicidality and in dealing with people in suicidal crises on a scientific basis and thus is an important measure in suicide prevention.
Professionals in the pedagogical, therapeutic, health and social sectors are repeatedly confronted with people in crisis situations. However, suicide announcements and attempts by clients pose great challenges even for the most experienced professionals. It is therefore crucial to be prepared for such exceptional situations and to have the appropriate tools to recognise and avert suicidal crises and to prevent them as far as possible, in the sense of primary prevention.
